Must I buy/install a cylinder cage?

NO. The SANS10087-1:2013 states that “ domestic installations do not require cylinders to be placed in a cage”.

However:
1. Cylinders must be secured to prevent accidental fall over;
2. If public access to cylinders are possible, cylinders must be in a locked cage (a cage that is 80% open, i.e. build with mesh-type pattern protection, usually steel cages.

Is my gas geyser automatically covered by my home/building insurance?

NO. The obvious answer to this question is yes, surely it is. However, due to the historical bias to electric geysers described in insurance policies, a gas geyser is technically not mentioned. Insurers could therefore, and sometimes do, regard gas geysers as being EXCLUDED from the cover.

Homeowners should inform their insurance companies of their gas geyser installation. If needed, to specifically request confirmation of cover. Also, forward them the Certificate of Compliance.

How long is my gas Certificate of Compliance (COC) valid?

Answer (courtesy of Conveyancing Attorney MCvdB):
SHORT ANSWER: 5 years. SANS regulations require the replacement pigtails/couplers every 5 years, and this modification indirectly limits the validity of the certificate to 5 years.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: When a property is sold, a new gas certificate is required. When any modification or alteration to an installation is done, a new gas certificate is required.
